Format Research Front Cover 1 - Billboard Music Magazine

The magazine that I will be analysing first is a music magazine called Billboard.

Audience: The target audience of this magazine looks like it is aimed for female teenagers. It looks like this because there is a teenage girl filling up the front cover so female girls can relate to her. Furthermore, the pink and white text will attract more females than it would males because this is a more feminine colour scheme. Also the image of Lily Allen would probably draw attention to females because the style of Lilly Allen's music attracts females based on the content of her songs so the fans of Lily Allen would be the biggest contenders for the target audience of this magazine.

Masthead: The masthead of this magazine sort of defies the norms of other types of magazines, however sticks to the norms of general music magazines. This is that the main image is covering most of the masthead so you can't really see what the name of the magazine is. This may be because Billboard are trying to create a brand and they are sort of implying that if you don't know who they are then they are not interested in you. This sort of relates to the target audience, they are mainly targeting regular customers with the style of the masthead. The typography of the masthead also looks like a regular font they use which again means that the producers of the magazine want to create a brand. The filled in yellow part of the 'd' is very effective because it looks very professional and the idea of creating a brand makes the audience immediately recognise what this magazine brand is. If you were to look at this magazine for the first time you wouldn't really know what the name is, however you can a have guess on what the name is called. If you look at it long enough you can guess what the word says and this is a very effective idea because it makes the audience think and take a second look at this magazine, however to this really effectively there needs to be a very powerful main image to attract the customers attention.

Main Image: The main image of this magazine plays a big part in making the magazine sell. The mode of address of the person on the front cover works very well, as she is looking directly into the lens of the camera. This has been done because it creates more effect and drama and also engages the reader more. In addition to this, the image is a famous music artist so the audience can relate further to the magazine which would persuade more people to buy it especially if they were interested in Lily Allen so this main image is very powerful. The fact that the image is just of the head and shoulders on a plain grey background implies that this person is very important and as there are no other images on the front cover then it suggests that most of the magazine will be about Lily Allen as she is dominating the front cover.

Text: Although there is only one image on the front cover of this magazine, there is plenty of text around it to give information about the content inside. The text format itself looks very effective, especially the cover lines with the pink. I think the colour choice with the pink and white looks very professional and also relates to its target audience. It is clear to read and is spaced apart well so this avoids confusion with the readers, they know what cover line is which and what is says. The negative aspect of the text is the main cover line at the bottom of the page. The white text is lost in front of the light background of the image, which includes her pale skin and white top. I feel that the producers of this magazine could of used a bolder colour or even a shaded outline around the text for the main cover line to make it stand out more. You really need to take a good look to try and make out what the main cover line says, you wouldn't be able to read it with a quick glance which is what the main cover line of all magazines should do as this is the main story and in this case is relating to the main image, which in fact is the only image of the page, so the producer should of used a bolder colour on the main cover line to complement the main image.
